On the abdomen

Slide — drag the probe footprint anywhere in the epigastric window (or tap a spot). The curved footprint is drawn to scale.
Rotate — drag the knob on the ring. The amber dot on the footprint is the indicator; it points to the head in the sagittal plane and matches the amber dot on the image and in the 3D view.
Fan / rock — drag the dot on the tilt pad. Up/down fans the plane sideways through the tissue; left/right rocks the beam within the plane, toward the feet (◀) or the head (▶). Double-tap the pad to level the probe.
Press — drag the gauge to push the probe into the abdomen. Right under the xiphoid a firm press also turns the face up under the costal margin.
Patient position — Supine or Right lateral (P). Rolling the patient pools the contents in the antrum; the same stomach looks fuller on the right side.
Phone probe — 📱 in the Probe panel shows a code and a QR. Open probe.html on a phone, enter the code, and the phone in your hand becomes the probe: lay it flat with the top edge toward this screen (amber right edge = indicator), then tilt, twist and heel it; drag a finger on its screen to slide; its slider presses.
The dashed arrow from the footprint shows where the beam is aimed. Ribs, costal margin, liver and stomach are drawn from the model itself.

Reading the screen

A curvilinear probe: the top of the picture is the curved probe face, and the picture widens with depth. The amber dot marks the side of the screen the indicator points to: left in the abdominal convention (default), right if you switch to cardiac.
Black wedges are shadow from bowel gas, air in the stomach, or bone. Nothing behind them is seen and nothing behind them counts — slide, press, or aim around them.
The 3D view shows the same plane cutting the stomach (antrum highlighted), pancreas, aorta and IVC. Drag it to orbit; scroll to zoom.
Freeze and save — Freeze on the bezel (or F) holds the picture in any mode; Save image downloads what is on the screen — live or frozen, with labels, depth scale and the captions — as a PNG file.
Depth — the − / + buttons on the bezel (or [ and ]) set the image depth from 8 to 20 cm; the readout is at the bottom right of the screen.
Image detail — while the probe moves the picture is drawn quickly; once it is still it is redrawn sharper in the background. Detail on the bezel: Auto picks the sharpest your machine keeps smooth, High and Max force 2× and 4×, Off keeps the quick picture. Scoring and measuring never depend on it.

How the scores work

Acquire: pass when the patient is in the right position, the liver, antrum, pancreas and aorta are on screen and unshadowed, the gallbladder is not, and your plane lies within 25° of the sagittal cut with the antrum within 14 mm of it. ★★ within 12° and 6 mm · ★★★ within 6° and 3 mm. Hints cap the score at ★★. Any route to the right plane passes.
Measure: freeze the right-lateral sagittal antrum, put both calipers on the outer wall (serosa to serosa), grade the stomach using the supine thumbnail, submit. Pass when your area is within ±15 % of the antrum's true area in that image and the grade is right. The volume comes from Perlas 2013: 27.0 + 14.6 × area (cm²) − 1.28 × age; more than 1.5 mL/kg is more than baseline secretions.
